This was an emotionally intense piece for me to work on. The backdrop is my own eye, and the subject is the retinal surgeon who saved my sight. He performed two emergency retinal surgeries on the eye. I titled the painting "Symbiosis" because as I was working on it I thought about how much I needed him, but how at the same time he needed me in order to earn his living. The actual size of the paper is 11 x 15. I have indicated 14 x 19 1/2 inches as the size as this is what it is when cropped. - and it is the cropped portion which is visible here in the photo.
In 2008, Mary Begau Wykes made the decision to pursue her lifelong dream of being an artist. Though she had always had a yearning to paint, prior to that point she had not had the courage to pursue her dream. She had, however, always made a point of including creative pursuits in her life. Other creative activities have included singing, songwriting, playing piano and guitar, quilting, crochet, knitting, macrame and spinning her own yarn. Thinking that she had 'missed the boat' by not pursuing formal education in art, Mary held back on pursuing her dream of painting for many years.
